DJ Koze Presents Pampa, Vol. 1

DJ Koze’s release of Pampa, Vol. 1 is great for several reasons. For one, he has an outstanding aggregating knowledge of experimental music that dares to take a step back, for two (?) it features many of my favourite artists and producers and for three (?) it includes “new” music by Mount Kimbie, which me and many others have been waiting for a few years.

The new track is called “Bells_5” and is driven by organ and rapid high hats but is not a completely new material but an outtake from the “Cold Spring Fault Less Youth” sessions. According to the band, the song should not be taken as an indication of which way the new record is going. The band is currently recording new material, I believe in their studio in Hackney Wick, east London, although they started out in a bedroom studio in Peckham, south London, which is an area where I also used to live. As of now they are touring playing DJ sets but I had the chance to see them perform live at Northside Festival 2014, in Århus, Denmark, as part of their promotional cycle, which was an unbelievable live experience.

Pampa is a fantastic label that regularly puts out genre provoking material without ever losing coherence, and it will be great to see what the next volumes and next signings are going to be.
